A tour of Tugu Negara...

The visit to Tugu Negara was the first for Alia, Arif and Aira. Alia especially, was overly excited and intrigued by the history and controversies of this national monument.

The Tugu Negara is constructed to commemorates those who died in Malaysia's struggle for freedom, principally against the Japanese occupation during World War II and the Malayan Emergency, which lasted from 1948 until 1960.

Constructed in 1966, the sculpture that stands as a centerpiece of the monument is 15 meters tall, made of bronze and was designed by Austrian sculptor Felix de Weldon. The sculpture depicts 7 figures, 5 of the figures (1. holding the Malaysian flag, 2. armed with a rifle and bayonet (left), 3. armed with a machine gun (right), 4. soldiers tending to fifth wounded compatriot represents the victorious allied forces while the other 2 figures that lie on the ground represents that of the defeated communist forces.

In 1975, the monument suffered extensive damage due to an explosion. It has since been restored to its original state. A wreath-laying ceremony used to take place at the monument every 31 July on Warriors Day but the event was since moved somewhere else.

At the entrance to Tugu Negara there is an interwar-era cenotaph originally erected by the colonial British administration near the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. The cenotaph was intended to commemorate the Great War (1914–1918) and honour those from the British Malayan colonies who were killed in the war. The cenotaph's inscription would later include fallen British Malayan soldiers of World War II (1939–1945). Names of the fallen are engraved on plaques of the cenotaph as a tribute to their sacrifices. In 1964, the cenotaph was moved from its original location to the site of the National Monument in Lake Gardens.

As of the month of April 2022 it is permissible to pray in congregation without physical distancing in all mosques and surau in Wilayah Persekutuan but congregants are encouraged to bring their own prayer mats.

Attendance to mosques and suraus is allowed without age limit to those who have received Covid-19 vaccination. Mosques and suraus are allowed to perform the Sunat Tarawih Prayer of 20 rak'ahs in the month of Ramadan. While Qiamullail is allowed to be held from midnight.

Breaking fast, moreh and sahur events are allowed to be held and food is encouraged to be packed. Even tadarus al-Quran activities are allowed and can be performed at any suitable time in small groups.

Restoran Asam Pedas Selera Melayu Melaka has moved!

Restoran Asam Pedas in Sungai Buloh has been operating since October 2015. It serves a variety of asam pedas cuisine and beverages. In addition to the special dishes of Asam Pedas, there are also various types of side dishes and vegetables that could be picked from the menu.

The restaurant used to be located at Jalan Nautika AU 20/A Sungai Buluh has moved to a new location. It took us quite a while to locate the new restaurant. The new location is now by the main road of Jalan Matang Pagar opposite the Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Matang Pagar.

For those of you who crave spicy dishes may want to try their Melaka Asam Pedas dishes. The taste is still the same.

This mural area is located at Jalan Kenari 5, Puchong and decorated with various mural paintings behind two back lanes of the shop houses. This mural artwork project, with collaboration of Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya, was completed by final year students from The One Academy, Subang Jaya. The murals show the beauty and elements of the Malaysian cultures and portray the uniqueness of our country.

The famous Nasi Lemak Tanglin...

This morning we had breakfast at the famous Nasi Lemak Tanglin at Jalan Chenderasari near Taman Tasik Perdana.

It has been a long time since we visited this place. It used to be one of our favorite breakfast joint for quite a long time. It's always nice to eat here while reminiscing the good old times especially of our children schooldays. Back then, the nasi lemak stall was secluded, under the shelter of a big pokok saga somewhere near the existing food court.

The price of a plate of nasi lemak Tanglin has escalated steeply over the years. They have built permanent tents at the back to place more table and chairs to cater for customers. The place is livelier now, with life band playing oldies songs. Parking wise, still remains difficult as always as there are street vendors sprucing up, taking over some parking spaces.

To me the taste and flavor of the nasi lemak is just so-so. I would say that it is a little over rated. Although the ambiance is nice and cool the area is littered with rubbish.  And the foul smell from the unattended dumb site at the back of the food court is overpowering.
