Cerita biawak

"The bad days make the good days better..."

(As big as a small crocodile)

We visited our kebun Sg. Rambai only on weekends. So most of the time the chalet is left empty. Very often when we go back to our kebun, we’ll find other creatures making comfortable homes in our chalet. I don’t know what attracted them but we have bird nests on the roof and bee hives in the bathroom. We also find rats making their nests under the sink. We even have a couple of resident bats, looking after our chalet. We cleared nests and hives and they’ll be gone for a while, but a few days later, they’ll come again to take shelter and stay. After we spread sulphur and spray insecticide around the chalets, they stopped coming back.

But until recently…

We were rudely awakened by the noises in the attic. At first, we thought it must be some rats making their nests up there but when we went up to investigate, we found a pair of biawak (monitor lizards). No, not the big ugly ones like the komodo lizards but smaller. The easiest way to get rid of them is to kill them with something sharp but cold blooded murderers we are not! And on seeing us they fled speedily away.

We bought some eggs, made tiny holes and inserted some poison and left the eggs in the attic. Last weekend, we found one dead decomposing biawak. Another one to go… That evening we heard the other biawak searching the attic looking for his partner. When hubby went up to investigate, he shouted from the attic:

‘yang ini pun dah nak mati. Tak gerak2 pun. Nanti later I remove bila dia dah mati betul2…’

The rest of the day we did other chores and when it was nearing dark, hubby when up the attic to remove the dead biawak. To his surprise the biawak was no more there…

  1. Nong, you just call any Muthusamy or Ramasamy..they surely know what to do with the biawak. We used to have so many biawaks in the jungle behind our house. So my mom just inform Keling botol and everything settled. The Ibanese too love biawak.Once I hit a biawak in my camp and I just left it, 10 mins later I passed by the place, the dead biawak is already gone! Then I heard Jain anak Langkau had a barbeque of ...that day.

  4. Madam,
That’s what my mom told me too. Tapi tak sampai hati nak bagi dorang tu buat panggang lah. Lagi pun nanti kena dakwa pulak bila dorang terbongkang lepas makan biawak tu.

Maklumlah, biawak tu kan baru makan racun…

    Zino,
The kids kata chalet mak ni macam mini zoo, banyak unggas dan mergastua. Ada sekali tu, kita jumpa kulit ular atas peran tu.

Tapi sejak dah clear semak samun around the house tu, insyaAllah tak ada lagi he he…

    Sue,
Kalau ikut kan hati nak ketuk je kepala biawak tu dengan cangkul, tapi kesian pulak he he…

Elok jugak ada penunggu, boleh tolong jagakan rumah tu…

  7. biawak is one the ugliest creatures on earth. There was one incident where the biawak entered my neighbor's house. A big one. She had to call the bomba because it just refused to leave voluntarily.
    .
    .
There were many of them back in those days when I was still a kampung kid. The elders caught them and sold to the indians. I wonder up to this day what is so special about 'gudumbu curry'.

    salam again.

  8. Kak Pah,
Katanye daging biawak sedap tapi tak tau lah kalau dorang buat kari pulak! Kalau ada orang nak buat ternakan biawak untuk kulit nye, buat wallets and handbags. Mungkin saya boleh jadi supplier telur biawak, he he ...

  9. I think you can expect more visits in the future ... aha ... the biawak returns!!!

Kat belakang my MIL's house ada sungai, and we can see several biawaks swimming in there. Tapi nasib baik lah, they have not ventured into the house. It would be scary if they do, sebab biawak-biawak tu besar sangat!

  10. Hi Nong, I love your chalet in previous post. Wow! Thats the way to go....weekends spend time there, makan soto ayam, relax.

About the iguana, I used to catch them, the small ones at mining pools in KL, and sneak them into class.

Should have seen the Form 6 girls ( I was Form 3) scrambling out windows, doors screaming, "CROCODILE"! Ha ha.
And their chegu amazed everyone getting out the window in her sarong, ha ha ha.

You keep a song in your heart and have a pleasant weekend, best regards, Lee.

Bila kami pulang ..Aziz cari lah benda tu..rupa rupa nya..anak biawak!

  12. Hazia,
Biawak ni binatang yang hardy. Ketuk kepala dia sampai terbeliak mata & terjelir lidah pun boleh hidup lagi he he..

    Queen,
Tu lah yang ngeri ni. Poisoned eggs tu semua dah di makannye tapi tak nampak pun dead bodies. Kak nong takut dorang datang ramai2 balas dendam he he..

    Uncle Lee,
I look forward to those relaxing weekends in the kebun…

He he..You must be one naughty boy during your younger days. Luckily the biawak didn’t scramble up someone’s sarong or worst still, spit in your eyes… Boleh buta tau…

    Ezza,
Budak hafiz tu macam my son, Iwan. Badan je besar tapi penakut. Especially tikus dan lipas! Apa lagi biawak…

Itu sebab bila ajak the kids tidur kat kebun, dorang liat sangat. Baru dengar cerita pun dorang dah geli geleman…
