Pahang - Durian hunting in Kuala Lipis...

"Food for the body is not enough. There must be food for the soul..." - Dorothy Day

(Durian Kampung is my favorite)

The main durian fruiting season is usually centered around June-July. Pahang is one of Malaysia's major producers of durian.

Durian in Pahang is best represented by orchards from Bentong, Raub, Lipis and Temerloh. Over the past few weeks, Raub - Kuala Lipis road in particular has been lined with rows of durian kampung sales either by roadside, stalls or from the vehicles boots.

It is only natural to go hunting for durian when we are in that area!

We arrived in Kuala Lipis in late afternoon. There was nothing much to do so we parked our car near the old Masjid Negeri and walked around the old town and along the river. The old town and the new town is divided by the river.

The old Masjid Negeri is a very small mosque but it was built way back in 1888. It was built by an Arab Yemen trader named Habib Hassan. It can be considered as one of the oldest mosque in Peninsular Malaysia. It has remained the same all these years. It was called the state mosque because Kuala Lipis was originally the capital of Pahang before Kuantan was made the capital.

The new district mosque is Masjid Sultan Mahmud located close to the Railway Station. Travelers like to stop here for prayers and rest.

On the way back we stopped by a road side stall and bought some durian. The durian fruits were from small fruit orchards from the nearby Malay kampung. The vendor chose the best fruits for us to eat and some for us to bring home.
