Perak: The forgotten Victoria Bridge...

“The hardest thing to learn in life is which bridge to cross and which to burn...” - Bertrand Russel

(The forgotten bridge, still majestic)

On the way to Post Kuala Mu, we detoured to visit Victoria Bridge, or better known among the locals as the ‘Forgotten Bridge’.

Victoria Bridge, named after Queen Victoria of England, is a single track railway truss bridge located in Karai, Perak. It is one of the oldest railway bridges in the country, having been constructed in December 1897 by the Perak Railway Authority as a crossing over the Perak River. It served the local tin mining industry to facilitate the transportation of tin ore at that time.

The bridge has six solid ladders of red bricks. During World War II, this bridge was bombed and broken in two. The 117 years old bridge remained in use until 2002, when a wider concrete girder bridge built parallel to the old bridge was completed to take over the role of handling rail traffic. The new bridge is significantly wider, with room to support a second track, but in its early life it was only required to handle a single track.

While the old bridge is closed to rail traffic, its adjoining footbridge is still open to motorcycles and pedestrians and is now a tourist attraction.
