Our first mosque to visit in this trip was Masjid Lama Tanjung Bungah located next to the Floating Mosque of Tanjung Bungah along Jalan Ferringhi. Unfortunately the gate to the old was locked.

The old mosque of Tanjung Bungah started with a small surau that was built in 1967 when it became too cramped to cater for the increase in jemaah in the area. In 1977, the surau was upgraded to a mosque which could accommodate about 500 worshippers. All expenses were from state government contributions and public donations.
With the growth in population and increase development of housing estates in the area, the construction of a new mosque was proposed in the 1980s. The land area occupied by the old mosque was too small and its location right by the side of the busy road leading to Batu Ferringhi made it unsuitable to build a new mosque on the same location.
Due to the limited land area and the increasingly expensive land prices in the Tanjung Bungah area, it was proposed to construct a floating mosque instead.
