At the junction of Penang Road and Chulia Street stood a 19th century Islamic building called Anjuman Himayathul Islam, which means "association for the service of Islam" in Arabic. It is an organization founded by the Pakistani Muslims in Penang. It traces its establishment to an organisation established in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1884.

(A new building to replace the old mosque) |
The Anjuman Himayathul Islam is a body for the Indian Muslims to provide for the welfare of Muslim brothers. It is located in a three storey mid-20th century building along Chulia Street. It has a circular minaret from which the calls to prayer could be heard.
The building replaces an earlier structure on the same spot, where the Indian Muslim community has once owned properties, which can still be seen as in the Line Clear Nasi Kandar, the Masjid Alimsah Walley and Benggali Mosque on Leith Street.
