The York Street Mosque was built in 1914 by an Indian Muslim businessman named Shaik Ghani, also known as Eusoff Gunny. Before the establishment of Masjid Jalan York, the residents of the area performed congregational prayers in a surau which is said to have existed on the same site five years before the construction of the mosque. Various religious and social activities have been organized by the mosque to bring the Muslim community together, including Quran classes, Marhaban classes and kompang classes. This marhaban and kompang class is popular among the villagers. They often receive invitations to enliven weddings and other events.
