Masjid Jamek Jalan Hatin is an old historical mosque situated along Hutton Lane. It is one of the oldest mosques in Penang. It served the once substantial Malay community that lived around Hutton Lane, including Ariffin Road, Jalan Sekerat and Jalan Dinding.
There are several different tales about who the founder of Masjid Jamek Jalan Hatin was. Some said that this mosque was built approximately in 1870 by Hj Saad on two plots of land donated by Tuanku Mohd Arshad, a Kedah royal relative who resided in Kulim and Hj Yusof who resided in Penang.
But some denied the story and said that the mosque was built by Hj Abdullah also known as To' Hj Dollah. However, they did not rule out the possibility that both played a role in the establishment of the mosque because they were related.
Some considered the mosque proximity to the home of the late 19th century Malay entrepreneur Mohd Ariff Mohamed Tajoodin. There is a high possibility that Mohd Ariff also was instrumental in the establishment of Masjid Jamek Jalan Hatin. Or perhaps his son Wanchee Ariffin, who built Masjid Wan Chik Ariffin in Perak Road.
