Kampung Pekan Lama Sungkai was the original town of Sungkai. Pekan Lama Sungkai is located on the banks of Sungai Sungkai next to Sungkai bridge. Pekan Lama Sungkai was once very busy and lively with various business and social activities using sampans as a major form of transport. Because the old town was always hit by floods, a new township was built on a higher ground and became Sungkai new town.

Pekan Lama Sungkai has many historical buildings and beautiful old wooden houses. Some are well restored and stood magnificently. But many have been left unoccupied, waiting for its time to collapse to the ground.

One of the historical buildings is Masjid Lama Pekan Lama Sungkai. The beautiful classical old mosque is still at its original site since 1903. After the new mosque was built, the old mosque was turned into a tahfiz centre for the children of Sungkai. The mosque had undergone several upgrading and extensions. Only the centre portion of the mosque is from the original structure. This old mosque was often hit by floods almost every year.

A new Masjid Jamek Sungkai was built on a higher ground to replace Masjid Lama Pekan Lama. The new mosque is built larger to accommodate the growing number of congregation. Its location on the side of the main road makes it more strategic for both residents and visitors to pray in this mosque.
